Why People Don’t like Realtors

The Most Common Reasons Why People Don’t Like Realtors (and Why I Became One)

Let’s face it: Realtors often get a bad rap. We’ve all heard the stereotypes – pushy, money-hungry, and more concerned with closing a deal than with their client’s best interests. While these stereotypes don’t represent the majority of real estate professionals, they persist for a reason. Having witnessed these issues firsthand, I decided to get my real estate license to be part of the solution. I had been in real estate since I was a kid because my dad was a developer in the Phoenix, AZ area and surrounding cities. So was my grandfather. But I mostly did my own thing with real estate but I used them for deals a lot and always the same thing, they always felt they were the smartest people in the room. That’s what having a license can do to some people and it doesn’t matter what the license is for.

Common Complaints Against Realtors

  • Lack of Communication: One of the biggest frustrations people have with realtors is poor communication. This can include not returning calls promptly, failing to provide updates, or not listening to their client’s needs. Buying or selling a home is a significant life event, and clear, consistent communication is crucial for a smooth process.
  • Pushy Sales Tactics: No one likes feeling pressured, especially when making a major financial decision. Some realtors use high-pressure tactics to force a sale, which can leave clients feeling uncomfortable and distrustful.
  • Prioritizing Commission Over Clients: Sadly, some realtors are more focused on their commission check than on their client’s needs. This can lead to steering clients towards properties that aren’t a good fit or pushing them to accept offers that are below market value.
  • Lack of Transparency: The real estate process can be complex, and some realtors don’t take the time to explain things clearly. This lack of transparency can leave clients feeling confused and unsure if they’re making the right decisions.
  • Inexperience or Lack of Knowledge: The real estate market is constantly changing, and it’s essential to work with a realtor who is knowledgeable and up-to-date. Inexperienced or uninformed realtors can provide bad advice, costing their clients time and money.

Why I Decided to Get My License

I’ve personally experienced some of these issues when buying and selling properties. I’ve dealt with realtors who didn’t listen to my needs, weren’t proactive in their communication, and seemed more interested in closing the deal than in helping me find the right home. These experiences motivated me to get my real estate license and provide a better experience for others. I wanted to be the anti-realtor. I wanted to make people happy if they used me doing some of the basic things, like answering my phone, listening to what “they” want done, not me.

I believe that realtors should be trusted advisors who guide their clients through the complexities of the real estate process. We should be excellent communicators, prioritize our client’s needs above all else, and operate with transparency and integrity. Maybe because I wasn’t doing real estate for a living and I didn’t need the money to pay my bills I could give my friends and others the service and smarts and professional experience they deserve making one of the biggest deals of their life. I know I try.
